“A Place to Believe, A Place to Belong”

February 2012

In the past month or so, I’ve had the recurrence of a knee injury, a flare-up of allergies, and a case of walking pneumonia.  That has led to 4 doctors’ visits, 3 blood tests, 2 x-rays, an MRI, and an impending surgery.  I turn 44 this month, and I’m feeling every bit of it lately!  So, why do I put myself through all of this?  Why spend so much time and money?  Mostly, it’s because I want to feel better, and the good news is that by the beginning of March, my knee should be strong enough to run on again.  I can go back to my regular exercise schedule!

But again, the question is there: Why do I put myself through all of this?  Why do I exercise and try to watch what I eat?  There has to be more of it than just feeling better.  Doctors tell us that by taking care of ourselves, our lifespan will be longer; but what good is a longer life if it doesn’t have meaning and purpose?  The Thrive! series we’ve been participating in the past few weeks has sought to challenge us—physically and spiritually—to live a life of vitality, not just for ourselves, but for others.  By applying God’s principles for thriving, we start to see a difference in our well-being and our spiritual growth.  And when God’s people begin to thrive, that starts to have an effect on the community and the world around us.  In other words, taking care of yourself is not just a good thing for you; it’s also good for others.

I hope that many of you have begun to look at yourselves in a new way because of this series, to understand more about who you are and why you matter…because you do matter.  You matter to your family, you matter to Riverside, and you matter to our community.  I also hope that many of you will begin to use the blessings of your physical and spiritual vitality to help others through our upcoming after-school ministry.  You’ll be able to see first-hand how your life makes a difference!  It is also my prayer that you have been awakened to the possibilities of sharing life through the ministry of Imagine No Malaria.  It is incredibly ambitious of the United Methodist Church to think that we can eliminate deaths from malaria in Africa by 2015…but it is an attainable goal, and with God’s help we will do it!

In the words of the song we’ve been singing:

You were born to thrive, Called to live a life

Opened up to grace and to seeing God’s face,

For when you thrive, the world around comes alive,

And you learn to care, all your gifts to share

Peace in Christ,

Shawn

Ash Wednesday, February 22nd

at 7:00 PM

Come to worship and mark the beginning of Lent with the imposition of ashes…in Riverside’s distinctive way.

For His loving kindness is everlasting.

Personal HELP Request – anyone can do this.

Personal Help Needed: Many times in the church when we ask for help, people are unwilling to commit to the time requirements or the financial requirements or even the physical requirements. Sometimes you have to be a certain age. This project requires no money, very little physical (actually more mental) and time will only be a few minutes, of your time. Nobody is too old or too young. I would like for you to share with me why or what you love about Riverside. I would ask that you keep responses as short and direct as possible (no bloviating).  Just the facts please. The fewer the words the better.  Example: We have the best pastor in the world, I just love his sermons and on and on.  While these things are true, just put Pastor Shawn or pastor. You can e-mail me at :  vinylman @roadrunner.com , leave me a message on my office phone 264-3315 or leave it in the office as I have a mail box there or regular mail @ 202 Edrieann Drive EC, NC 27909. Thanks in advance for your help!    Mike Barkley

Set your calendars for Riverside upcoming events for 2012:

Ladies All Day Retreat is scheduled for Saturday, March 31st here at Riverside.  More information coming soon…                                                                                                                                     Christi Quance

Cluck-Cluck-Cluck Bi-annual Barbeque Chicken – I ask of all God’s people to be in prayer for the upcoming BBQ Chicken Dinner set for Saturday, May 5th. It is a great tool to help support the church.

Your Friend in Christ, Thomas Phelps

Homespun Marketplace scheduled for Saturday, October 6th.  A “new fandangle” bazaar type event.  Be thinking crafty and artsy.  More information will be coming in the weeks ahead.         Christi Quance

Riverside’s News

Trustee Report: We had our first trustee meeting in 2012 with everyone present. We welcomed our 2 new members of the trustees Billy Colson & Jim Watson. We could see how they will be excellent addition to our group. Mike Barkley was selected as Chairman and Shannon Berry was selected as Secretary. As we start a new year we already have maintenance issues. The heat pump that provides heat to the church offices went out and had to be replaced. I suggested we buy Francis and Pastor Shawn snuggies, but replacing the outdoor unit seems to be the best solution although more expensive. I include this on a light note to see if anyone is reading this article. On a more serious note, we also had service on all the heating/ AC units and some repairs there as well.  We are also looking at a new or slightly used copier for the office. We were informed by the copier people that our present machine is almost beyond repair. Some features no longer work or work properly. We are looking at different options. On a smaller scale of things we are having the emergency lights replaced. These are the lights that come on when the power goes off. Butch Yost is donating his labor to get this completed for us. Thank you Butch!                                                    Trustee Chairman for 2012 Mike Barkley

Agapé Circle: The Agapé Circle started off the year with a “Soup for the Soul” meeting hosted by Brendia Forbes and Anne Gaddy.  The soups were delicious and the meeting was special. Frances Shannonhouse preformed the duty of installing the new officers with a very impressive installation service to remind each officer of the importance of the duties of her office. The new officers for 2012 are President- Joy Johnson, Vice President-Brendia Forbes, Secretary-Sandy Terryberry, and Treasurer-Becky Phelps. Sissy Colson will serve as the Sunshine Committee and Alex Stisser will be on the Nominating Committee. The Social Committee will be Ann Twiddy, Fran Christman, and Linda Goodwin.

United Methodist Women:  Thirteen women attended the annual January UMW Breakfast. We made plans for the coming year.

On Thursday, January 26th the Riverside UMW had a very successful pledge service.  Thank you ladies for your commitment to United Methodist women ministry.

On Saturday, January 28th eight ladies attended the mission study on Haiti at Duck UMC.  It was a wonderful day of learning and fellowship.                                                                                 Cathy Gibbs, UMW President

Hungry S.O.U.LS. Ministry report:

Friday, February 12th – the team fed a meal of chicken stew, chicken broccoli casserole, bread, lemonade and homemade brownies to 50 of our neighbors. I want to say that I am truly thankful to be part of our strong team, serving the most vulnerable members of our community. It really is a large undertaking to prepare food for that many people, deliver and then serve it in about an hour and I’m always amazed (and Thankful to God for I know His Hands are at work) that it goes as smoothly as it does. Thank you all for what you do and give in Christ’s Name and with His Love.                                                   Butch Yost

Friday, January 26th – 52 hungry souls feasted on a delicious meal of fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, peas and various desserts.

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Philippians 2:4 (NKJV)

Kids That Care: January 28th eleven children came together to donate supplies to support our local SPCA, God’s furry baby ministry, and learn more about what’s being done to care for, save and find new homes for the homeless furry babies.

JC Sawyer Winter Supply Drive:  Please help JC Sawyer restock their supplies.  They especially need: glue sticks, 2-pocket folders, scissors, pencils, hand sanitizer & gender neutral/girl backpacks.  Please place the donations in the box in the hallway.  Thank you.                                                                             Andrea Herring

On behalf of our families, we would like to express our gratitude for the generosity shown to us throughout the Christmas season.  It is such a privilege to serve alongside you, and to lead you in worship and spiritual growth.  We appreciate that, during this time of year when there are so many to think of, you think enough of us to bless us with your gifts.

Many thanks!  Shawn and Dan
